Rigidity
Rigidity in Parkinson's Disease is characterized by increased resistance throughout the range of passive movement (Jankovic, 2008; Sawle, 2002). It can be tested by grasping an individual's hand and moving their elbow gently through flexion and extension while feeling for an increase in tone (Sawle, 2002). An increase in sustained tone can also be felt when an individual makes large-amplitude movements with their opposite arm (Sawle, 2002). Tone in the legs and trunk can be tested through passive movement such as rocking an individual's body from side to side while placing your hands on their shoulders (Sawle, 2002).
